The Academy of Music was previously the Department of Music founded in 1992, beginning to enroll undergraduate students since 1993, and postgraduates since 2007. Over decades of development, it has formed an integrated system of three core undergraduate programs: Musicology, Music Performance and Choreography. On the basis of undergraduate education, it has acquired the right to confer Master’s degree in first-class discipline of Music and Dance in 2011, covering categories of Music Teaching(professional degree), Music and Dance Science (academic degree), Music Performance, Dance Performance (professional degree) and 13 different majors. The college currently consists of departments of Vocal Music, Keyboard, Instrumental Music, Dance, and Musicology, owns three research institutes of Music Education, Music Literature and Music Performance and the Music Grading Test Service Center of the Central Conservatory of Music. It has 4 provincial college students’ art troupes of the Choir, the Dance Troupe, the Traditional Chinese Instruments Orchestra and the Wind Band, one ministerial- provincial MIDI audio Lab, one Chinese Han Dynasty Musical and Dancing Studies and Performance Research Center with world-class Steinway grand piano and top-class music teaching facilities.
There are presently 560 full-time undergraduate students and 137 graduate students studying here, with an excellent team of teaching staff of61 teachers, including 4 professors, 24 associate professors, 22 lecturers, among whom there are 3 PhD holders, 1 PhD candidateand 1 foreignteacher, with 30 as master supervisors. 18 teachers have overseas study or research experiences.
We stress onthe combination of theory with practice in terms of talents cultivation and are exploring diversified ways for good education. Cooperative relations have been established with dozens of middle schools, art training centers and instrument selling companies in Xuzhou, Huaian, Changzhou, Wuxi and other cities.In order to meet the demands of teaching and social development, we integrate theory with practice and enhance our professional “normal, national, practical”characteristicson the basis of Xuzhou local folk music and Han Dynasty music culture and thus organically bondthe applied talent cultivation mode, the innovation mode and international cooperation mode together.
We are always pursuing progress and development in scientific research. We have consecutively won over 10 prizes of different projects from MOE Social Sciences, Jiangsu Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, Jiangsu Office for Education Sciences Planning, Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture. Many teachers have also won awards at national, ministerial and provincial levels. Lots of papers have been published on academic journals. Due to excellent performance, we have become the most outstanding teaching unit compared with similar academies in Jiangsu province.
Based on the four provincialcollege students’ art groups, the Academy seized every chance to participate in all kinds of professional competitions for students to improve their skills and performance. The Choir won the first prize of the National College Students’ ArtFestival. The Traditional Chinese Instruments Orchestra won the Sunshine Prize - thehighest prize of the college small-scale orchestra group in the NationalTeenager Traditional Instruments Orchestras Beijing Invitational. The originaldance - Tashi Metok on the Prairie, created by the Dance Troupe, won the grandprize of the Dance Contest in the 3rd College Student’s Art Festivalof Jiangsu, etc. Excellent students have sprung in from here: 2013 the Voice of China Champion, Li Qi. First Prize Winner of the Undergraduate Folk Style Group in the 3rd National University Music Education Vocal Voice Contest, Wang Wenhui. Their excellent behavior showed professional skills and excellent ability in terms of talent cultivation.
