The Confucius Institute (CI) at Miami Dade College (MDC), inaugurated officially on Apr 29th 2010, was co-founded by Jiangsu Normal University (JSNU) and Miami Dade College (MDC), with the agreement of cooperation signed in Nov, 2009.
It is administrated by its advisory board, set up in Oct. 2012. On Aug 7, 2015, the board meeting, with its new members elected, was held at MDC. There are 4 board members from MDC side and 3 from JSNU. Dr.Lenore Rodicio, Provost, MDC (Chair of the Advisory Board),Julie Alexander, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, MDC, Ms. Tatiana Mackliff, Director of International Education, and Mr. Peter Liu, the president of the Chinese Association of Science, Education and Culture. The 3 members from JSNU are: Dr.Zhou Ruguang, President of JSNU at the time (Vice Chair of the Advisory Board), Mr. Sun Wei, Director of International Affairs of JSNU at the time, and Associate Prof. Liu Xinglin, Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at MDC.
Dr. Xuejun (Jim) Yu from MDC acts as the director of the Confucius Institute at MDC, with associate professor Liu Xinglin from JNU as deputy director. Apart from the two directors, the CI staff includes 4 full-time Chinese language instructors, 3 volunteer Chinese language instructors and 1 part-time office assistant.
The Confucius Institute at MDC locates on Wolfson Campus of MDC in Suite 1201, opposite to the school library, with 4 office rooms and a big lobby. It is an ideal place with good facilities and lots of books on Chinese language and culture available to all readers.
The Confucius Institute at MDC offers credit Chinese language classes to MDC students on most of MDC campuses and different kinds of non-credit Chinese language and culture classes as well. It often hosts international conferences, forums or seminars on various topics concerning Chinese language, culture, economy, education and, etc. It also hosts or co-host all sorts of Chinese culture related events all year round. Its outstanding work is recognized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Houston, Miami Dade College, as well as the local Chinese associations. It was awarded “Confucius Institute of the Year” in 2015.
The Confucius Institute at MDC is always working hard at promoting the exchange and cooperation between the two hosting universities—Jiangsu Normal University and Miami Dade College-- and has achieved a great deal in its progress, hoping for the greater to come in the near future.
