School of Life Sciences at JSNU has grown from Department of Biology established in 1956. It was renamed School of Life Sciences in 2003. We offer undergraduate programs in Bioscience (Teacher-training), Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical, the former two of which are provincial distinctive majors. In 2012, the Bioscience-related disciplines (including Bioscience and Biotechnology) have been selected as disciplines in the development project for strong disciplines of universities based in Jiangsu Province. In 2014, Bioscience entered Top 50 in Nature Index China (ranking 42nd). Now, we have a mobile post-doctoral research station of Biology and one doctoral program in the first-level discipline (Ecology) and offer a doctoral program in Biology (Satisfying national special needs doctoral talents program) and one graduate program in the first-level discipline (Biology & Ecology) and a graduate program in Subject Teaching (Biology). There is one National Biological Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre, one national Key Laboratory(development) of Biotechnology for Medicinal Plant of Jiangsu Province and one provincial Key Laboratory for Phylogeny and Comparative Genomics of Jiangsu Province.
Many of our faculty members are professional researchers as well as tutors and lecturers, carrying out scholarly investigation into their specialist subjects and making innovative and meaningful discoveries that feed into teaching and contribute to global knowledge. The number totals 62, including 19 professors (13 doctoral supervisors), 29 associate professors. Totally, 51 teachers have PhD (including doctoral candidates). There is one teacher enjoying Foundation for Universities Key Teacher from MOE, one State Council Expert for Special Allowance. One teacher is Outstanding Mid-aged Experts of Jiangsu Province. Besides, many teachers and academic teams have been chosen as outstanding individuals or teams at various levels.
This school has a building covering 5,000 square meters and teaching facilities costing ¥80 million Yuan. By far, we have undertaken nearly 56 key national-level projects. As a whole, our teachers have published 323 papers on academic journals from home and abroad.
We consistently attach great importance to talents cultivation and their overall development. In recent three years, our students have got 20 national undergraduate scientific and technological innovation projects and many first prizes in national competitions. We have 685 full-time undergraduate students and 157 graduate students. The enrollment rate of graduate entrance examination is quite high. Large numbers of students have been recruited by CAS, Peking University, Fudan University and other famous universities and research institutes at home and abroad.
Our aim is to insist the principle Teacher & Student First and Quality First. We will keep improving our environment and condition to cultivate more talents in the field of life science.
