School of Mathematics and Statistics


The history of School of Mathematics and Statistics can be dated back to 1952. It is one of the earliest and most comprehensive schools in JSNU. Mathematics is the provincial Key First-level Discipline of 12th Five-Year Plan in Jiangsu. Statistics is the First-phase and Second-phase Preponderant Discipline in Jiangsu. We offer the two graduate programs in Mathematics and Statistics. Meanwhile, we offer professional graduate programs in Curriculum and Teaching Methodology (Mathematics) and Subject Teaching (Mathematics). There are five undergraduate programs including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Statistics, Applied Statistics and Economic Statistics. Among them, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics are provincial and national distinctive majors. Mathematics-related majors are provincial key disciplines of “12th Five-Year” Plan in Jiangsu. Applied Mathematics is the outstanding discipline echelon of Jiangsu Young Teachers Training Program. The team of “Nonlinear Analysis and the Application” is the Outstanding Science and Technology Innovative Team in Colleges and Universities of Jiangsu. The team of Analytics Curriculum Groups is the Outstanding Teaching Team in Colleges and Universities of Jiangsu. At present, we have over 700 full-time undergraduate students and nearly 200 graduate students.

There are seven teaching and researching offices including Analytics, Algebra, Geometry and Topology, Differential Equation, Probability Theory & Mathematical Statistics, Information and Computing Science and Advanced Mathematics. In addition, there are four university-level institutes including Mathematics Researching Institute, Nonlinear Science Researching Center, Stochastic Analysis and Application Researching Institute and Statistics and Finance Researching Center.

The number of our faculty and staff totals 85 (78 full-time teachers), including 20 professors and 35 associate professors. 71% of our teachers have titles of senior professional post. 54 teachers have PhD, accounting for 69%. 57% of our teachers have the experience of overseas study. Of all the full-time teachers, 6 persons received the Special Government Allowance of State Council. One person received the Excellent Young Scholars Fund supported by The National Natural Science Foundation of China, and two persons were supported by New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education. One person was supported by supported by Jiangsu Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar. There are two distinguished professors of Jiangsu Province (with key support), eight talents supported by Jiangsu 333 Talent Program, two talents supported by Six Talent Peaks Project in Jiangsu Province and eight talents supported by Jiangsu Young Teachers Training Program. Besides, one person was awarded as the Author of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and four other persons as the Author of Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertation.

In the past five years, we have achieved a batch of research results with high level and widespread influence. Our teachers totally hosted 42 projects of Natural Science Foundation of China (26 under research) and 15 ministerial or provincial scientific research projects. They have published over 200 academic papers, including Adv. Math., JASA, Trans, America Math., Society, J. Functional Analysis, J. Differential Equations, SIAM J. Math. Anal., SIAM J. Numerical Analysis, etc. In recent years, our scientific research has developed rapidly, winning second prize of Technology Progress from the Ministry of Education of the PRC, and the third prize of Jiangsu Technology Progress.

We view talent cultivation as our central task from the beginning. In recent five years, we have achieved 25 Jiangsu Graduate Students Cultivation Innovative Projects.Five papers have been chosen as Outstanding Graduate Thesis in Jiangsu. There are one national excellent course, one national excellent resource sharing course, two provincial excellent courses and two provincial excellent graduate courses in the school.

Our students have won first and second prizes in the national Mathematical Contest in Modeling and first prizes in The Chinese Mathematics Competitions at national and provincial level for many times. Our school's postgraduate enrollment rate reaches approximately 20% and many of our postgraduate students will continue their studies in the doctoral programs of China’s famous universities or other key scientific research institutes.

Now, our leading group are seizing the opportunities and guiding all faculty and staff to forge ahead with determination and work sturdily. Our aim is to deepen connotation construction, optimize our teaching staff, enhance scientific research, keep insisting on talent cultivation and provide teachers and students a good condition for learning and working.
