School of Linguistic Sciences and Arts (formerly the School of Linguistic Sciences) JSNU, is aprofessional linguistic school with distinctive features and significantinfluence. During the long-term construction, we have always adhered to anintegrated and comprehensive research orientation, achieving fruitful resultsin the construction of frontier disciplines and inter-disciplinary studies suchas neurolinguistics, engineering linguistics and theoretical linguistics,forming the characteristic research mode of basic-research-oriented languageontology study with an application and popularization of research results. TheSchool has achieved quite a few “Firsts” or “the Only’s” throughout the countryor in JiangsuProvince.

Based on the structure of the originalInstitute of Language Study and its academic and disciplinary forces, the School wasestablished in 2008 as the only professional linguistics school in China mainland,with an independent institutional system. Hao Ping, the contemporary ViceMinister of Education Ministry and the Chairman of State Language Commission,when unveiling the nameplate for the School, pointed out that the establishmentof the School was a milestone in China’s linguistics history.

China’sNeurolinguistics originated here. The linguistics research team of JSNU was thepioneer of China’sNeurolinguistics. Since the 1990s, we had begun to combine linguistic studywith Neuroscience, established the research orientation of Neurolinguistics,enrolling and training China’sfirst Neurolinguistics Doctors and Masters. At present, our research coversdyslexia, neural lexicology, neural syntax, neural phonetics and the neuralmechanism of language disorder like sign language, stutter and aphasia,achieving high-level results.

The School was granted a first batchof Key Basic Research Bid Project of the National Social Science Foundation,“the Research of Neurolinguistics and Discipline Construction”, accompaniedwith 3 other National Social Science Fund Key Projects, 2 National NaturalScience Fund Projects and 1 “973” Project.

One research won the highest awardby the Government of our country in the field of Humanities and SocialSciences: China’s Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social SciencesCollege Award--- the First Prize of Humanities and Social Sciences Research ofMinistry of Education, 2 Second Prizes in Higher Education Outstanding ResearchAchievement Award of the Ministry of Education, 4 First Prizes and severalSecond Prizes of Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social ScienceResearch of Jiangsu Province .

The undergraduate teaching work wasgranted the First Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award (2014), and thepostgraduate teaching was granted the first prize of Jiangsu Graduate EducationReform Achievement Award (2017), as well as the Second Prize of GraduateEducation and Teaching Achievement Award by China Academic Degree andPostgraduate Education Association (2014).

Our journal of Linguistic Sciencesis selected in the first batch of funded journals by the National SocialSciences Foundation, and in a shortest period of time it is collected into theESCI and CSSCI database, and into The Guide to the Core Chinese Journals. Amongover 200 journals which had been funded by the National Social SciencesFoundation, Linguistic Sciences is the only linguistic journal that was awardedthe Excellent Grade title (23 Excellent Grade winners all together).

We initiated the establishment ofthe JiangsuProvinceCollaborativeInnovationCenterfor Language Ability, which has a significant nation-wide influence. TheCenter’s Neurolinguistics research team undertook the major preparation andplanning work for the first session of the International Conference on Languagesponsored by the Ministry of Education together with the People’s Government ofJiangsu Province and UNESCO, on the theme of “language ability and the humancivilization and social progress” in 2014. The School owns the first and theonly key discipline in linguistics and applied linguistics of JiangsuProvince,a Jiangsu Provincial National Key Discipline Foster Point, and is among thefirst and second batch of Jiangsu Provincial University Predominantdisciplines. There is the first key laboratory based on linguistics in JiangsuProvince, as well as the first batch ofJiangsu Provincial Philosophy Social Science Key Research Base.

The School owns the most advancedplatforms for the study of human brain function, equipped with Neuroscan 256 -on - brain electrical system (ERPs ) and GE 3.0 T magnetic resonance imagingsystem (fMRI).

The School has the largest space forlinguistics study in China.In 2013, the CollaborativeInnovationCenterfor LanguageAbilityBuildingwas completed, with about nearly 7,000 square meters. Together with theexisting 3,000 square meters of independent school building, there are over10,000 square meters in total area. It provides an excellent, comfortable,modern and international environment for students’ study and research here.
