As a new optical material, transparent ceramics have the advantages of both single crystal and glass, and have good thermal and physical properties, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Different optical properties can be achieved by proper doping of rare earth ions. Transparent ceramics manufacturing process is simple, low cost. They are not only have advantages of high concentration doping and high optical quality advantage, but also are feasible for large size and mass production. Compared with other materials, they have the advantage of irreplaceable application in the fields of high-power solid laser, white light LED lighting, nuclear medicine and high-energy physics detection, and defense weapon equipment. Transparent ceramics have recently acquired a high degree of interest and notoriety. Basic applications include lasers and cutting tools, transparent armor windows, night vision devices (NVD), and nose cones for heat seeking missiles. Currently available infrared (IR) transparent materials typically exhibit a trade-off between optical performance and mechanical strength. For example, sapphire (crystalline alumina) is very strong, but lacks full transparency throughout the 3–5 micrometer mid-IR range. Yttria is fully transparent from 3–5 micrometers, but lacks sufficient strength, hardness, and thermal shock resistance for high-performance aerospace applications. Not surprisingly, a combination of these two materials in the form of the yttria-alumina garnet (YAG) has proven to be one of the top performers in the field. High quality YAG transparent ceramics are producible in our lab by using our own technology with scattering loss better than 0.001cm-1.
