《汉学家与中国》教学大纲

 

 

教学内容

“汉学家与中国”课程在一年级下学期开设,由四个中国文化知识模块构成,涉及16个主题,共16讲,每讲分为三部分:1)汉学家生平;2)汉学家主要成就;3)中国文化要旨。

模块一的主题为“中国哲学”,共四讲,分别介绍汉学家安乐哲、狄百瑞、施舟人和葛兰言的生平及其治学成就,再总体介绍中国哲学的发展情况,重点解析儒家和道家的主要思想,最后对中国的宗教情况及其主要内容作简要介绍。

模块二的主题为“中国语言文学”,分四讲介绍汉学家白乐桑、吴伟克、诗琳通、宇文所安、顾彬、马悦然和高本汉的生平及其治学成就,然后先总体介绍中国文学史的发展脉络,再重点解析中国古典诗歌和中国现当代文学的主要成就,最后对汉语语言的特点、规律和使用情况作精要解析。

模块三的主题为“中国历史”。在这四讲中,先分别介绍汉学家费正清、傅高义、史景迁和吴芳思的生平及其治学成就,再总体介绍中国历史的发展脉络,讲述明清史和现代中国的重要事件和历史人物,在探讨古代丝绸之路的基础上,重点阐释当代“一带一路”倡议的提出和最新发展。

模块四的主题为“中国艺术”,分四讲介绍汉学家高罗佩、喜龙仁、青木正儿和艾伯华的生平及其治学成就,然后就其各自的研究专长,向留学生重点介绍中国人在书法、绘画和戏曲方面取得瑰丽艺术成就,在介绍中国民俗的同时,让各国学生对比自己国家的民俗,进行研究性学习。

 

Teaching Contents

This course is offered in the second semester for first year students and includes four modules with 16 topics on Chinese culture. It has 32 course hours with 2 hours each week. Each lecture consists of three parts: 1) the life of the sinologist; 2) major achievements of the sinologists; 3) the essence of Chinese culture related.

Module one centers on Chinese philosophy. Four lectures on the life and academic achievements of sinologists Roger T. Ames, William Theodore de Bary, Kristofer Marinus Schipper and Marcel Granet are provided. And then a brief introduction to the development of Chinese philosophy is made, especially the main ideas of the Daoism school and the Confucian school. And finally a summary about Chinese religion is given.

Module two focuses on Chinese language and literature. Four lectures are offered to first introduce the life and academic achievements of sinologists Stephen Owen, Wolfgang Kubin, Goran Malmqvist and Klas Bernhard Johannes Karlgren, and the development of Chinese literature history will be covered. During this part, analyzing the main achievements of Chinese classical poetry and contemporary Chinese literature will be discussed thoroughly. Lastly, the characteristics, rules and usage of Chinese language are discussed.

Module three talks about Chinese history. These four lectures firstly introduce the life and academic achievements of sinologists John King Fairbank, Ezra Feivel Vogel, Jonathan D. Spence and Frances Wood, and then the development of Chinese history is illustrated, and the important events and historical figures of Ming and Qing dynasties as well as modern China are focused on in this part. Finally, on the basis of the exploration of the ancient silk road, the proposal and the latest development of the Belt and Road initiative are discussed .

Module four discusses Chinese art. Four lectures are taken to firstly introduce the life and academic achievements of sinologists Robert Hans van Gulik, Osvald Sirén, Aoki Masaru and Wolfram Eberhard. And then according to each sinologist’s research expertise, an introduction about Chinese magnificent artistic achievements in calligraphy, painting and opera to foreign students are given. Moreover, it is given in way to incentivize the international students to compare their own folk culture with other cultures and do their research study during the study of Chinese folk culture.

 

教学方法

课程选取国外著名的汉学家,采用主题式教学内容的编排形式,通过介绍汉学家的研究成就,引出中国文化具有经典性与代表性的文化精粹,以生动的事例和文字、图片及音视频材料,借助现代技术,对中国文化进行深入浅出的介绍。

课程通过教师课堂讲授、师生互动、教师引导学生阅读、学生就相关主题的分组深入探讨与展示、撰写读书笔记和课程论文等多种教与学、学和研的形式,充分调动学生学习兴趣,发挥主体主动学习、思考、研讨的积极性,实现课程通过教学使学生之知识、能力和素质得以整体提升的目的。具体而言:

首先是知识方面,通过中国文化基本知识和核心问题的研习,学生可总体了解、掌握中国文化发展的基本线索,对中国文化的核心问题有基本的认识和理解。

其次是能力方面,课程通过引导学生阅读、课堂互动、分组研讨、课程论文等教学活动,促进学生在问题的发现、思考、分析与解决,沟通与交流,以及学习能力的养成等方面,均有显著的提升。

最后为素质方面,教学过程中,教师从国内外不同社会文化现象出发,开展比较、分析式的教学,促进学生养成文化理解与认同、视野开阔、思维敏捷和通达乐观等优良素质或品行。

Teaching Methods

This course selects well-known sinologists from abroad and adopt thematic teaching method to introduce their achievements and the essence of classic and representative Chinese culture. Chinese culture is introduced with vivid examples, text, pictures, audio, video and many other modern technologies.

This course will combine classroom lectures, teacher-student interaction, teacher-led reading, students’ in-depth discussion of relevant topics, notes taking and course papers, and many other study and research methods to help students raise their interests in learning and inspire their initiatives in learning, thinking and discussing, and finally realize the goal of improving students’ knowledge, ability and learning quality.

The students are expected to make progress in the following aspects:

1. Knowledge: they can generally understand and master the basic development of Chinese culture and have a basic understanding of the core issues of Chinese culture through the study.

2. Ability: they can profoundly improve their learning skills in discovering, thinking, analyzing and solving problems, and promote their communication skills by teacher-led reading, classroom interaction, group discussions, and course papers.

3. Quality: they can largely promote their learning qualities of cultural understanding and recognition, broad vision, quick thinking, openness and optimism in teacher’s comparative and analytical teaching with the topics of different social and cultural phenomena both at home and abroad.

 

 

考核方式

本课程最终成绩由读书笔记、课堂表现、小组讨论和演讲、期末课程论文成绩等组合而成。各部分所占比例如下:

1)平时成绩:40%。主要包括课堂表现、小组讨论和展示等。

2)期末考核:60%。主要为期末课程论文和读书笔记(主要为元典阅读或经典阅读),课程论文主要就感兴趣的中国文化主题,完成一篇课程论文,但力避平庸,观点明确,尽量成一家之言,且言之有据。

 

Assessment and Grading

Students’ final grade in this course will be assessed as follows:

Class attendance & participation: 15%

Book discussions & reviews: 15%

Presentation: 20%

Course paper: 50%

Throughout the semester, it is required that the participants of this course attend class on time, finish each reading assignment on schedule, send their discussion question before each class, actively take part in class discussion, and participate in field research. And after that, they should write one book review together with a final research paper and then present in class
