JSNU’s discipline of Geosciences entered the global top 1% in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) rankings for the first time, according to the latest statistics from Clarivate Analytics in September 2026. It is JSNU’s tenth discipline to enter the top 1% of ESI rankings, after Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, General Social Sciences, Computer Science, Animal and Plant Science, and Agricultural Science and Environment/Ecology.
The Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is a basic analytical tool launched by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 2001 to measure scientific research performance and track the trends of scientific development. It is a quantitative analysis database based on more than 10 million literature records from over 12,000 journals included in Web of Science (SCIE/SSCI) under Clarivate Analytics. The database ranks scientists, institutions, and countries across 22 academic disciplines by tallying citations in academic papers and updates its data every two months. It’s currently one of the most widely used indicators for evaluating the international academic standing and influence of universities, academic institutions, and countries/regions.
