On October 25th, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, professional organization for higher education evaluation, officially released the 2021 “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking”. The list, which includes 96 first-level disciplines, is based on all institutions with academic postgraduate degrees in that discipline, and publishes the top 50% of institutions in that discipline. A total of 4,992 subjects from 486 universities were listed.
In the list released, there are 16 subjects in JSNU. 4 disciplines, including Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics, Education Science and Design Science, rank in the top 20%. Marxist Theory, and Foreign Language and Literature rank between 21% and 30%. 5 disciplines, including Geography, Philosophy, Applied Economics, Chemistry, and Mechanical Engineering, rank in the range of 31%-40%. Optical Engineering, Biology, Law, Psychology, and Urban and Rural Planning, rank in the 41%-50%. Urban and Rural Planning entered the ranking for the first time, and Foreign Language and Literature, Applied Economics and Law rose more than 20 places.
The index system of “Best Chinese Subjects Ranking” includes 5 categories of talent training, scientific research projects, awards, academic papers, and academic talents, 17 dimensions, and more than 50 objective quantitative indicators reflecting discipline competitiveness, involving more than 100 observation variables. The ranking data are all from third-party data sources, such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and international and domestic literature databases.
