On the morning of October 25th, the unveiling ceremony of the statue of General Liu Xiansheng, the first president of Jiangsu Normal University (JSNU), was held in the landscape garden, which lies in the east of Jingyuan Building. Mr. Liu Qiang, the son of General Liu, and his wife, Ms. Shi Jinping, as well as Mr. Wang Jianbo, the alumnus of JSNU who graduated in 1982 from Chinese Department and he is the chairman of Bairong Group, were invited to attend the ceremony. Fang Zhong, Secretary of CPC JSNU Committee and the president of JSNU, Zhou Rugang attended the ceremony. Chiefs from related functional departments and representatives of JSNU’s teachers and students attended as well. The event was hosted by the vice president of JSNU, Wang Xiaosan.
At the ceremony, leaders including Liu Qiang, Fang Zhong, Zhou Ruguang and Wang Jianbo jointly unveiled the statue. In the speech, Fang Zhong reviewed the life of General Liu. He pointed out that General Liu actively devoted himself to the revolution and made outstanding achievements. In 1952, at the beginning of the establishment of our university, General Liu was in the capacity of commander of the southern Jiangsu military region. And he became the first president who advocated the spirit of hard struggle and created good studying atmosphere. Since then, JSNU has walked on a glorious way of development in the past 70 years. Dating back to its history, we can find that it is difficult to start a business and many excellent pioneers urges us to forge ahead.
Fang Zhong said that the ceremony is an great event in JSNU, which further encourages the broad masses of teachers, students and alumni to inherit General Liu’s wishes and work hard for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We hope that all the teachers and students will take him as an example, pass the red genes of seniors. We should carry forward the campus spirit of “Integrity, Innovation, Principle and Practice”, be dependable and keep pace with the times. We should make more breakthroughs in the development of JSNU.
Liu Qiang said that since his father participated in the revolution, he has deeply understood the importance of knowledge. After the victory of the revolution, to responded to the call of the government, he founded a school. From the establishment of the school in 1952 to thriving JSNU in 2022, the development of JSNU is lasting and cultivating talents for China will always be its mission. In the past 70 years, all the teachers and students of JSNU have adhered to the motto of “Virtue, Knowledge, Ambition and Action”. On the new journey, we will inherit red genes and create greater achievements in teaching as well as scientific and technological innovation.
Wang Jianbo delivered a speech at the ceremony. He said that it’s a great honor to donate the statue to JSNU. General Liu has dedicated his life to the China and Chinese people, and his great achievements and noble character are worthy of the younger generation’s remembrance. It is hoped that generations of JSNUers will carry forward the unfulfilled will of General Liu, and work tenaciously to contribute to the China’s education.
