School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was established in 1958 as one ofthe oldest departments in Jiangsu Normal University.It was initially named as Department of Biochemistry, and then Physical and Chemical Department, Department of Chemistry during the following decades. It was officially renamed as School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in January, 2007. The school offers four undergraduate programs, i.e., Chemistry (teacher-training program), Applied Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Currently, 693 undergraduate students and 73 master's candidates are studying in the school.
In the past years, the school has made remarkable achievements in the construction and development of academic programs, faculty team, teaching and academic research, talent cultivation, laboratory and public service.
The School currently has 75 faculty members including 16 professors, 25 associated professors, 6 doctoral supervisors and 52 master supervisors.
Among them, there are two academicians, two of the Thousand Talents Program, eight academic leaders ofJiangsu Innovative Project and seven outstanding young backbone teachers of the project. One person was awarded the National Labor Medal and one was awarded the title of provincial model worker. Two people were awarded Excellent Educators in Jiangsu.
The Chemistry Program of the school is the provincial key program and has ranked into top 1% in the world according to the ESI (Essential Science Indicator). The Joined Program of Chemistry & Biology is the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions. According to the latest data statistics, the Organic Chemistry Program ranks No. 15 among all Chinese universities.
The School is offering one primary Master degree Program in Chemistry and 3 secondary Master degree Programs in Applied Chemistry, Pedagogy (Chemical teaching and Curriculum) and Education (Chemistry).
The school has developed a series of major research areas involving heterocyclic chemistry, microwave-mediated chemistry for chemical synthesis, organometallic chemistry, green chemistry for chemical synthesis, electrochemical corrosion, biological analysis and materials chemistry. In the past five years, the faculty members had published more than 400 articles in the international and domestic journals, of which over 300 are published in SCI journals. Now, the school has undertaken 21 research projects (including one key project) funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Besides, there area number of research projects funded by Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Province, and national or private companies. The total research funds are more than 30,000,000 RMB. 78 national patents were applied and 34 of them were authorized. The school had received a Second prize of Natural Science awarded by Chinese Ministry, 3 Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology by China Petrochemical Association, and one second prize of excellent textbook awarded by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation.
In terms of international academic exchange and cooperation, the school has hosted and sponsored a number of conferences, symposiums and workshops on various topics. The Nobel laurate Prof. Dan Shechtman and other famous scholars including Prof. Peter stang, Prof. Amos B. Smith III, Prof. Albert Padwa and the academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, Prof. Zhenhe Tong, Prof. Hongyuan Chen, Prof. Yongqiang Tu were invited to give lectures and speeches at the school. Faculty members attended and gave plenary and keynote talks in the international conferences and symposiums.
The school has excellent facilities for teaching, research and practice, with one province-level laboratory (Key Laboratory of Green Synthetic Chemistry for Functional Materials of Jiangsu Province), two province-level teaching centers (Chemical Experiments Teaching Demonstration Center and Engineering Practice Education Center), two local-level laboratories (Modern Analytical Test & Techniques Laboratory and Green Chemistry and Techniques Laboratory), one local-level research center (Xuzhou Green Chemical Industry and Engineering Technology Research Center) and two university-level institutes (Institute of Organic Chemistry and Institute of Applied Chemistry).
In terms of talent cultivating, the school attaches great importance to improve teaching quality and developing students’ innovative and practical ability. More than 20 internship bases have been set up. Students have made remarkable achievements in national and provincial professional competitions. Totally, students in the school had got 49 national patents, 10 provincial prizes, published 36 academic papers and obtained 10 provincialacademic projects.The employment rate of graduates remains up to 98% in successive years. Over 36% of students passed through the postgraduate qualification examinations. More than 300 undergraduates study further in top-ranked overseas and domestic universities.
