The 13th Seminar and Representative Assembly of Society on Modernization of Chinese Language (SMCL), hosted by SMCL and organized by JSNU School of Linguistic Sciences and Arts, JSNU Advanced Institute for Language Ability, Editorial Office of Linguistic Science was held at Jiangsu Normal University during April 19 and 22.
Professor Zhou Ruguang, President of JSNU, Zheng Wei, Vice Director of Office of Policies, Regulations and Inspection, Department of Language and Administration, Ministry of Education and other leaders attended the opening ceremony and addressed speeches.
Nearly 200 scholars, teachers and students from 70 universities, scientific institutes and corporations like Peking University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, East China Normal University, Beijing Normal University, Xinjiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing Normal University, Institute of Applied Linguistics Ministry of Education, the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), Microsoft Research Asia, Leyan Technologies and the Commercial Press.
12 experts, including Professor Yang Yiming from JSNU made splendid keynote speeches on April 20. On the next day, panel discussions were held to discuss the theme “Review and Future of the Modernization of Chinese on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. Over 100 scholars made reports, covering various fields like modernization of Chinese, language policy and planning, vocabulary and dictionary, Chinese phonetic alphabet and phonetics, social linguistic and media language, language theory, neurolinguistics, language teaching, language information and artificial intelligence, Chinese characters and traditional culture, arousing heated discussion over participants.
